Software standards is an area where there is a great potential for rapid gain by collaboration. Few software standards currently exist for the data structures and procedures which make up a computer vision system. A Standing Committee on Software Environments has been formed to determine definitions for commonly used data structures and procedures which make up a vision software environment. This committee is contributing a European component to the ARPA "Image Understanding Environment", in order to assure that the results of ARPA's standards definition initiative will address the needs of European computer vision and be open to use by European science and industry.
