Gesture in conversation: problems in description and interpretation
The University of Pennsylvania
Abstract:
What I will try to do is to outline, with specific examples, what seem to me to be some of the leading features of "gesture" as opposed to other kinds of actions. I will attempt to show how one may distinguish the "units" into which gestural performances may be organized and then say something about the complexities involved in understanding how "gestures" are related to the organization of speech in everyday conversational situations.
